About Divergent Fitness

The Divergent Fitness Mission

Divergent Fitness strives to improve the quality of life for people with autism and other neurodivergent conditions, their parents, and their family. We also help individuals suffering from severe anxiety and depression to replace medications with movement and fitness. Since neurodivergence knows no age limit, neither do we and we treat individuals of all ages.

About Divergent Fitness - Our Story

As a neurodivergent person, founder Mike Ramirez has lived a lifetime of passion for helping other neurodivergent individuals and their parents to live higher quality, more fulfilling lives. Pursuing this goal from the beginning of his career, he started as an Early Intervention Specialist for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), working with the very youngest children; 0-3 years old at first and then 3+.

He then moved to the Child Development Institute, where he served as a therapist, ran CrossFit sessions independently, and trained others to become CrossFit instructors. One day, a parent with a neurodivergent child asked if he could recreate the CrossFit experience for her child because a traditional gym environment overwhelmed them.

That one question gave birth to SpecialFit, an exercise facility specifically designed to provide a safe environment for neurodivergent individuals. At last, neurodivergent children and their parents had access to fitness opportunities that understood and accommodated these athletes’ unique requirements.

Starting Divergent Fitness

Like thousands of other businesses, the pandemic shuttered SpecialFit. While the COVID-19 mandates were challenging for everyone, they were especially difficult for people with autism. Many of these individuals and countless other neurodivergent people developed severe anxiety and depression, among other conditions, creating and exacerbating somatic errors.

There was a silver lining in SpecialFit’s closure. We began experimenting with protocols to treat the somatic errors of individuals with conditions other than autism, including:

  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Down Syndrome
  • Panic Attacks
  • Severe Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Trauma

With our expanded focus on treating multiple neurodivergent conditions with both movement and fitness, we opened Divergent Fitness in 2020 and are continuously documenting and refining our protocols. Because of our success with neurodivergent individuals, we now work with several universities, including Indiana University, as well as doctors specializing in treating the conditions we address.

In addition, we are collaborating with technologists to develop the tools that will enable us to measure and quantify our protocols’ impacts on these conditions.
